
Dr. Stephen Flemming has had a long-time interest in conservation, dating back to his high-school days when he was working on piping plovers. He went on to do Honour’s and Masters degrees at Acadia University, and then a Ph.D. at Queen’s. Stephen joined Parks Canada in 1991, and has worked in various capacities in the conservation field at Fundy, Gros Morne, and Kejimkujik National Parks, as well as the Atlantic Service Centre. Currently, he is working on species at risk recovery at Kejimkujik where he has fostered a major public involvement program (10,000 volunteer hours annually). Stephen is also the Coordinator for the Atlantic Cooperative Study Unit for Protected Heritage Areas Management. In this capacity, he is building partnerships to achieve advancements in natural and cultural conservation and appreciation. Stephen has received several awards, including the Award for Meritorious Service at Canadian Parks (Canadian Parks Council), the Parks Canada CEO Award, and the Public Service Award of Canada.
